Classes begin the week of January 16 unless otherwise noted. Adult classes, workshops and short-term exhibits take place in the organization-owned Art Center Building at 818 Pike Street in Lemont, PA unless otherwise noted.
The Registration Form can be filled in directly on the their website – http://www.artalliancepa.org/Registration_Form_for_Adult_Classes_and_Workshops.pdf (except for credit card info), and then printed and mailed to the Art Alliance.
Classes that do not receive sufficient registrations will be cancelled. Please let the Art Alliance know at 234-2740 or info@artalliancepa.org as early as possible if you plan on taking a class

Realist Drawing Foundations

This class focuses on basic concepts in realist drawing. While advanced students work on their separate projects, beginners start out with simple shapes/objects to draw from. Students work from life and pictures in graphite, colored pencils or pastels (and a medium of their choice). Subjects include still life, fruit, flowers, and landscape. Exploration in Conceptual Sculpture

This class will present participants with the opportunity to explore topics of identity and self through the creation of 3-D works. We will first examine how various artists have incorporated their personal histories into their art and then draw from our own unique life experiences, as well as from those around us, to create our own works of identity expression. Each 3-hour class will include relevant readings, discussion, and group critique as well as 2 hours of guided work time. There will be no restrictions on the size, medium, or style of your work so bring your creativity!.

Pastels

Pastel is a versatile medium and using an underpainting provides an opportunity to plan and problem solve before starting to paint. Artists have used a variety of underpainting techniques for pastel painting, including a pastel wash, watercolor, gouache or acrylic wash to establish values or provide contrast. Unusual acrylic grounds or handmade papers in conjunction with acrylic gesso can also provide an interesting, textured surface on which to paint. This class will explore the use of these techniques and allow participants to try several and bring a painting to completion. Contact Anne for materials list.

In this simple, colorful and fun Japanese surface design technique of folding, dipping and dyeing lovely colors and patterns can be created. Create papers that can be used for picture frames, book jackets, origami, ornaments or wrapping paper. Bring different papers to try: typing paper, construction paper, heavy napkins, coffee filters, paper towel etc. Rice paper will be provided. After discovering the joys of dye on paper we will apply our learned techniques to a 4-foot silk scarf (provided). Materials to bring: disposable gloves, metal kitchen tongs, plastic clothes pins, an apron and a notebook.

Encaustic, painting with wax, is an ancient medium experiencing a resurgence as artists explore its creative possibilities. The term literally means “to burn in” and involves using pigmented wax on an absorbent but rigid surface to create layers that are fused together. The resulting works are often abstract, can incorporate collage materials and have an interested depth and translucency.
